Easts Defeat Gunghalin - Rd 7 John I Dent Cup
In what was billed as the "Match of the Round", Easts have held on against a spirited Gunghalin side to win 24-18 out at Gunghalin Enclosed. Trips out there in recent years have not been kind to us!
Running into a significant breeze in the first half, Easts didn't get off to the start they had planned for and talked about pre-game with Gunghalin going out to an early 7 nil lead. Easts hit back quickly to level up before conceding again. Easts went into the sheds down 12-7 at half time.
A classic "half time spray" from Coach Tim Cornforth seemed to re-focus the troops reminding them of the privilege they enjoy to pull on an Easts 1st grade jersey. His words had an immediate impact with the scores again being levelled early in the 2nd half. Gunghalin did cross the line again but Easts crossed for 2 more of our own. The final 6 point margin was threatened several times in the dying minutes of the match with Gungahlin having a late surge.
As with previous weeks, a number of players were called up and "stood up". There were particularly impressive performances from Tom Pilkinton and Liam Bilston who continues to build a huge profile in the Club. Congratulations to or own "Tongan Torpedo", Vake, on debut for the Club.
Next week is a much needed rest before another tough encounter against Wests who had a strong win yesterday against Uni Norths.
