Kiama 7s Report - 23rd Feb

A week ago we didn’t know we would be competing in the annual 7s tournament at Kiama, yet there we were yesterday, competing with some of the Nations best club 7s teams.

To say our preparation wasn’t ideal would be an understatement. The pre-season focus has been on the 15 man game but having received a late call up to the tournament, we wouldn’t be making any excuses. Coach Tim Cornforth picked a side that contained a number of Colts age players. This was a deliberate ploy to reward hard work throughout the pre-season but to also expose some of the Club’s younger talent to senior rugby. As our results will confirm, this young crew really stood up.

Game 1 in the tournament saw us lose narrowly to Oatley (Sydney side). The 2 tries to 1 score line was probably a fair result but frustrating nonetheless. The team arrived in Kiama with less than 15 minutes to get changed and warmed up (after a 2 and half hour bus ride). The slow start can be attributed to this.

Game 2 had us facing local rivals, the Uni Norths Owls. Our boys prevailed with some outstanding contributions from Toni Fifita, George Morseu and Epeli Ula.

Game 3 was against Hunters Hill, another Sydney Club. Hunters Hill had won their previous 2 games easily meaning we had to beat them by 30 pts to progress to the semi’s. In what was our best performance for the day, Easts won 3 tries to 1 with all players contributing but particularly impressive performances from the young lads. If that was a preview to what the season holds for Easts, our supporters have reason to be excited. Braydon Law, Brandon Donelly, Tiko Twist, Epeli Ulu, Joel Etherington, Liam Harrison and Daniel Greig Williams are names that you should remember.

A big thanks to Mark Bryant and the Kiama organising committee for what was an outstanding day.
